The Young Spirit Dancers formed in 1995, began as a cultural exchange program with the Pueblo people in New Mexico.  Upon their return, the eight youth participating in this exchange decided they wanted to continue to dance and invite more Rochester, NY, area Native American youth to join them.  In addition to Iroquois social dances, some members of the group have been taught Pueblo dances from Zuni elder, Chester Mahooty, former founding member of the Internationally-known American Indian Dance Theatre.  This group includes smoke dance competition winners as well as members who have been head dancers at pow wows.  Members of the Young Spirit Dancers are Seneca, Mohawk, Cayuga, Navajo, Zuni Pueblo, and Innupiat and range from 3 to 24 years of age.
