Accelerated College Education (ACE)

The ACE program is a concurrent enrollment program in which high school students take CCC college courses at their high school and earn CCC college credit.

History
The first ACE courses were offered in 1987 to 135 students in six high schools.  The initial program was a collaboration among the six schools,  SCT BOCES and CCC.  The program has grown to currently include 39 high schools across the Southern Tier of New York and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania which provide high quality educational experiences to over 2000 students.  CCC is a founding member and is accredited through the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP).  NACEP is an organization representing colleges from across the country that offer programs similar to ACE and was established for the purpose of professional exchange, development of common standards and sharing of information on best practices for member colleges.

Student Eligibility
ACE is for high school juniors and seniors.  Students should have a strong academic background – (i.e.  “B”  high school average).  However, the ACE instructor can recommend students who may not meet the minimum high school average but who the instructor feels can successfully complete the college level work required.    Students must meet the prerequisites for the course as described in the college catalog.  In the case where a course requires eligibility to enroll in ENGL 1010 and the students have not taken those courses, they must demonstrate proficiency through a means approved by the College English department. Students that have taken a minimum of 12 ACE credits and have maintained a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative GPA are eligible to become members of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

Registration Process
Students enroll in ACE courses with their guidance counselor.  Guidance counselors submit class lists which include name, address, date of birth, social security number for each student, and the name of the faculty member teaching the course to the Office of Academic Outreach at Corning Community College, 1 Academic Drive, Corning, NY 14830 by August 1st for the Fall semester and by December 1st for the Spring semester.  Students are required to obtain a Certificate of Residency from their county of residence.  Student Administrative Services will assist students in filing the required form for the Certificate.

If students do not wish to take the ACE course for college credit, they will be required to contact the Office of Academic Outreach by calling 607-962-9140 by November 22, 2009 for the Fall Semester and April 4, 2010 for the Spring semester to drop the course without incurring tuition charges for the course(s).  ACE faculty are responsible for using the MYCCC web site to ensure their class rosters are accurate and complete, as well as for entering final grades at the end of the semester.  Questions about MYCCC and entering grades should be directed to the registrar’s office, 607-962-9291.

In September, the college mails out bills to students for the Fall semester.  In February, the college mails out bills to students for the Spring semester.

Withdrawing from an ACE course
Students will be able to withdraw from a course and incur no financial obligation by filling out a drop slip and sending the form to the college Registrar by November 22, 2009 for the Fall, and April 4, 2010 for the Spring.  After these deadlines, a student is responsible for paying the tuition.  A student may elect to receive a grade of W (Withdrawal) instead of a letter grade (A – F) by filling out the appropriate form and sending it to the college Registrar by December 6, 2009 for the Fall, and May 9, 2010 for the Spring.

ACE Scholarships
There are ACE scholarships available for Chemung County residents only through a generous donation made by the Casella Waste Management Company. For further information please contact Dr. Louise Paul at 607-739-3581.

Transfer Credit
CCC is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.  ACE courses will generally be accepted at State University of New York schools.  However, program issues may arise which may determine if the course is used for an elective or a program requirement.  Over 300 other colleges and universities have indicated that they will accept CCC credit as well.
