Academic Advising Process

New Student Advising Process

The new student advising process is a two-step process.  The first step for most students is placement testing (assessments).  Once a student has been accepted to Corning Community College, he is directed to contact Advising & Counseling Services to schedule an appointment for placement testing. The placement tests will assess the student’s ability in reading comprehension, English, and mathematics.

Once a student has completed placement testing, he will be given an advisement appointment.  It is at this advisement appointment that the student will meet with an academic advisor to discuss his academic plans, career goals, program requirements, and to schedule his courses for the upcoming semester.

On-going Advising

All full and part-time students who are enrolled in 6 or more credit hours, in a college program (matriculated) are automatically assigned an advisor.  The staff at Advising & Counseling Services assigns an advisor based on several considerations, the most important being the student’s personal choice of an advisor.  If a student does not personally select an advisor, then an advisor with an in-depth knowledge of that program is assigned.  The particular person assigned also depends on many factors, but the goal is to be certain students have access to a skilled advisor.

Advisors at Corning Community College believe that every student should be actively involved and regularly working with an advisor.   The nature of the interactions will vary as students proceed through their academic program.  At first, time may be spent learning the “ropes” about policies and procedures and meeting graduation requirements.  Eventually, an advisor should be seen as a resource for assisting students in developing realistic career and transfer plans.  Advisors can be supportive in helping to remove barriers that interfere with academic success.  As graduation approaches, an advisor can be valuable in helping to locate a job lead or writing a letter of recommendation.  Each student has a slightly different journey through CCC.  An advisor may not be able to meet all of a students needs, but they are skilled in making referrals to the people who can help.

We encourage all students to work with an advisor as they are making their schedule for each semester or making changes to their schedule throughout the semester.  Advising & Counseling Services maintains the office hours and locations of all advisors on campus and would be happy to provide you with contact information.  If at any point a student would like to change his advisor, the staff at Advising & Counseling Services would be happy to help make this change.
