50th Anniversary Celebration

50 Years, 50 Faces
May 10, 2008
6 p.m. Palace Theatre

Corning Community College will conclude its 50th Anniversary celebration by hosting the grand premiere of Corning Community College: 50 Years, 50 Faces on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 6 p.m. at Palace Theatre, 17 East Market Street, Corning. Key figures from CCC's first 50 years highlight aspects of the College's history and impact - from modest, liberal arts beginnings in scattered houses on the City's Southside hill in 1957, to the multi-layered, comprehensive institution that today touches the lives of thousands throughout our entire region. Food and beverages will be available from 6 - 6:45 p.m. in the Visitors Center on Centerway Square with a welcome from Dr. Floyd Amann, president. The grand premiere of the living history project will begin at 7 p.m. The production was directed by Dave Rochelle, media administrator, who joined the College nearly 11 years ago from an early career as a television producer. Since then he has taught various Production and Film History classes and produced video and film projects - both independently and for CCC. This event is free and open to the public. Corning Community College stands as a testimony to our region’s ability to advance a great vision through to completion. Founded in 1956 by the Corning-Painted Post School District, CCC began modestly in a scattering of old buildings in the city of Corning.

Today, we encompass a 550-acre main campus on Spencer Hill with a complex of eight buildings including the Eileen M. Collins Observatory and Planetarium. The Observatory features a variety of telescopes including the historic working model of the famed Hale telescope at Palomar, CA. The Planetarium provides educational and entertaining programs for students, tourists, businesses and area residents. Visual images are projected onto a dome using curved projection screens, an astronomical projector on a three-stage elevator and special lighting systems.

Our service to the tri-county area extends to Airport Corporate Park, located near Big Flats, where visitors experience a state-of-the-art facility home to automotive technology classes, machine tool laboratories and computer labs. This facility allows CCC to offer classes, training and meeting space at a convenient location.

The Business Development Center, located on Denison Parkway in Corning, offers technical and professional development opportunities for local businesses and industries, as well as credit and non-credit courses and seminars. The federally funded Small Business Development Center is housed here, offering free, confidential management and technical assistance to new and existing firms.

Our Criminal Justice Center, located on Goff Road in East Corning, is home to our criminal justice programs, the Basic Police Academy and in-service police training for Zone 12. The building also houses a pistol range, critical incident training room and crime scene apartment. The Center has a student lounge and offers support services through the Student Success Center, Career Development Center and the learning labs.

CCC’s most recent addition is the Academic and Workforce Development Center located at 318 Madison Avenue in Elmira. The Center opened its doors on August 20, 2007 and features day and evening courses as well as workforce development training opportunities and More After 4:00 programs.

We’ve also expanded our vision to provide services at a variety of off-campus sites throughout Steuben, Chemung and Schuyler counties. We are truly a community college, and proud of it.

We hope that you will be able to join us as we celebrate our rich history and remarkable achievements.
