With a 3-0 sweep of Cayuga Community College in the first match of a POD match held at SUNYy Corning Community College Saturday, September 8, head coach Emily Andress became the second volleyball coach in Red Barons history to reach the 100-win milestone.
“It’s definitely exciting, it’s a goal I set out for myself when I started” said Andress. “Just honestly to be a part of this since I was a Red Baron, it means the world to me. These girls keep me young. I thorougly enjoy it, it’s a wonderful place to coach.”
Andress completed the accomplishment in just five seasons after taking over the head coaching job in 2013 and only trails Jen Gillespie. Andress will have a long way to go to reach Corning’s all-time wins leader Stacy Johnson, who has over 500 wins.
“That’s a big feat to try and take on,” Andress said. “Stacy is someone I look up to and I’ll do what I can. We’ll see.”
Corning went 1-2 in the tournament, defeating Cayuga CC 25-10, 25-5, 25-20 and falling to Onondaga Community College 23-25, 23-25, 25-19, 19-25 and Jefferson Community College 27-25, 11-25, 15-25, 19-25.
Megan Gridley had 76 digs on the day for the Red Barons, breaking the career record held by Sarah Heveland. Katelyn Artibee had 28 kills, 10 blocks and four aces, Blair Wampole added 17 kills and five blocks, Sierra Bartolis posted 31 assists and 40 digs and Danielle Dille contributed 38 assisrs and 25 digs.
