Kristin VanLoon is a first-year Corning Community College student and an adventure seeker.
Kristin’s urge for adventure budded during high school. Her impulse gradually increased, which significantly influenced her to join the U.S. Air Force at the age of 17.
She served in the Air Force for 5 years and still has a hard time naming the favorite place she explored. However, Kristin admits that she loved Washington, D.C.
“There was so much to do and so much to learn!” she said.
At 31 years old, 9 years after completing her time with the armed forces, Kristin is embarking on her next big adventure—Corning Community College.
She earned one degree from an online college while in the Air Force and hopes to study nursing at Corning as a second-year student.
“I chose CCC because I heard that they have a great nursing program,” Kristin said, mentioning that she’d like to work with elderly patients one day. “I’d like to work with older patients just because of the wisdom they have. I just love all of their stories.”
Kristin is involved with the CCC Veteran’s Association and spends time between classes in the Veteran’s Lounge on the Spencer Hill campus.
Her favorite class right now?
“My favorite class is chemistry,” she said. “It’s hard, but it’s really interesting when you get it.”
Although she was nervous about her transition to SUNY Corning as a non-traditional student, Kristin has shed those worries.
“Everyone has been super helpful in my transition and it’s been a blast,” she said.
