2019 Education Summit

It’s a perfect storm: teachers are leaving the profession and college students are choosing other majors and opting for other, often higher paying professions because of the rising cost of education. Enrollments in teacher prep programs dropped by 35 percent between 2009 and 2014, according to the Learning Policy Institute. Combined, these realities have created a shrinking pipeline of classroom teachers.

Schools across the country opened for the 2018-19 school year with reduced ranks, prompting various efforts: Michigan held a job fair in a late bid to attract teachers to fill open spots; a Vermont school official was quoted in a local publication saying, “almost every high school” was still searching for at least one math teacher.

Teacher shortages hurt students, but they also cost taxpayers: The Learning Policy Institute estimates the typical cost to find a replacement for an open teaching role is about $20,000.

Please bring your ideas for positive change to the Education Summit at SUNY CCC. At the Summit, we will be recognizing Outstanding Educators. Please nominate an educator you would like to see recognized at the Summit.
