Teaching Assistant: Professional Certification Preparation Part 2 Microcredential

This microcredentials aligns with requirements for the Education Studies A.S. degree should students choose to continue their education after obtaining the microcredential.
It is designed for those who aspire to work with children. Passionate professors will use their decades of experience to teach you how to work with children of all backgrounds, including those with special needs. The Teaching Assistant: Professional Certification Preparation – Part Two Microcredential prepares students with the college coursework to sit for the New York State Teacher Assistant Level III credentialing exam.
Students must take both the The Teaching Assistant: Professional Certification Preparation Part 1 and Part 2 microcredentials, for a total of 18 credits, to apply for the Professional TA certification through NYS Department of Education. The curriculum is aligned with the content of the certification exam. Note: Successful completion of the Teaching Assistant: Professional Certification Preparation – Part One microcredential is a prerequisite for the Teaching Assistant: Professional Certification Preparation – Part Two microcredential.
Microcredential Outline
The Teaching Assistant: Professional Certification Preparation – Part Two Microcredential is 9 credits and comprised of the following courses:
EDUC 1560 - Special Education and the Inclusive Classroom (3 cr.)
Examines the nature of inclusive classrooms, with a focus on students with exceptionalities. Describes education programming and strategies for serving students with special needs. 15 hours of field observation required. Prerequisite: Eligible to enroll in ENGL 1010.
PSYC 2207 (3 cr.) or PSYC 2208 (3 cr.)
PSYC 2207- Child Psychology (3 cr.)
Human growth and change from conception through middle childhood. Critical theoretical and methodological issues; concentration on physical, cognitive and psychosocial development. Includes a research project based on observation of children. Lectures/Observations in child behavior. Upper-level course. Prerequisites: PSYC 1101.
PSYC 2208– Adolescent Psychology (3 cr.)
Basic psychological processes such as motivation, intelligence, learning, and social relationships of the adolescent. Theories from psychology, sociology, social psychology, and cultural anthropology in explanation of the transition from child to adult in our culture. Emphasis on identity development, value clarification, and coping skills. Writing process. Upper-level course. Prerequisites: PSYC 1101.
Program Elective (3 cr.)
Guided program electives to be determined in consultation with mandatory advising and tailored towards the population and setting the student anticipates working with/in: ECED 1110 Introduction to Early Childhood, ECED 1120 Observing and Recording Behavior of Young Children, ECED 1140 Methods and Material of Early Childhood Education, ECED 1150 Partnering with Families, Schools, Communities, MATH 1130 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers, EDUC 2050 Schools and Society, EDUC 1560 or EDUC 2040- Special Education and the Inclusive Classroom or Teaching in Diverse Classroom, PSYC 2207 Child Psychology, or PSYC 2208 Adolescent Psychology.
