Optical Systems Technology, A.A.S.
Direct-to-Career Program
The Optical Technology AAS program prepares students for a career in the field of
optics. Students will take classes that focus on the areas of fiber optics, optical
systems, metrology, fabrication, lasers, ray optics, and photonics. Students will
learn how to utilize equipment and carry out procedures that can lead to immediate
job placement. Optical technologists are needed by companies and governmental agencies
that are critically involved in our nation's defense and security. This degree is
designed for students who are interested in entering the field of optics at the ground
level or those who need to obtain more education to advance their careers. Students
who wish to transfer to a 4-year institution should consult their advisor to plan
the appropriate courses.
This is a jointly registered program with Monroe Community College with a number credits required to take through MCC.
Graduates should be able to:
- Demonstrate an ability to test products using optical systems and geometrical optics procedures.
- Perform basic and advanced optical manufacturing techniques for modern precision optical components.
- Demonstrate and understanding and ability to carry out advanced metrology techniques for testing both optical systems and individual optical components.
- Demonstrate an understanding to evaluate electro-optic configurations and measurements.
Monroe Community College and Corning Community College, part of the State University of New York, have entered an articulation agreement (commonly referred to as a 1+1 agreement). This collaboration aims to support transfer students as they transition to Monroe Community College to complete the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Optical Systems Technology.
The Optical Systems Technology agreement is designed for all students, both young and old, to learn the topics of Optical Technology. Students who have an interest in using their hands to create items or to play sports, video games, Legos, knit, crochet, or have similar hobbies, will enjoy this program.
Students in this program will spend half their time at Corning Community College and the other half in a hybrid program with Monroe Community College. Some travel to Rochester, New York, is required.
