SUNY Reconnect Faculty Highlight: Dr. Ramona MillerPerson standing outdoors in front of green bushes and a tree, wearing a light gray cardigan and holding a neutral pose on a sunny day.

Meet Dr. Ramona Miller, Associate Professor of Public Health, Professional Studies Department Chair, and one of the faculty members helping SUNY Reconnect students achieve their educational and career goals through the Health Studies program at SUNY Corning Community College.

When did you begin working at SUNY CCC, and why/how did you end up here?

I've been working at CCC for 5 years now and it has been great. I originally worked in Health Administration, but always had a desire to teach someday. I was intrigued by CCC's mission and values and liked the idea of being in a community-centered college with a strong emphasis on teaching. It has been a great place to work and grow.

What classes do you teach at SUNY CCC?

I teach a variety of Health courses ranging from Foundations of Personal Health to Global Health, Healthy Aging, Human Sexuality, Health Education, and more. We also recently developed the Introduction to Health Administration course which falls into the Health Administration pathway in Health Studies and is a stand-alone Health Administration micro-credential as well. I enjoy all of the classes I teach - particularly Global Health and Principles of Community and Public Health due to the general content and great research projects that students are able to develop and present in those courses.

How do you see your program benefitting SUNY Reconnect students?

With shifting employment needs on a national level, there is always one area that will require constant employment and that is healthcare. We have an aging population that will require more care and more employees which provides a wealth of opportunities for those entering or growing in the healthcare field. The Health Studies degree can provide both clinical and non-clinical pathways for students so the opportunities are very broad on how you can use the degree. Whether you are looking to enter the workforce right after completion or move towards a 4-year degree, Health Studies via Reconnect can provide you with all of those options. We have three tracks depending on your area of interest: Allied Health, Community and Public Health, and Healthcare Administration.

What is a message you would like to provide for SUNY Reconnect students?

This is a great opportunity for community members so please consider taking advantage of it. Whether you haven't tried college at all or are close to finishing a degree, this opportunity can provide great benefits for you both personally and professionally. It is never too late to start and don't be afraid to come back. We welcome you!

What do you like to do during your free time/time outside of the classroom?

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, traveling, going to farmer's markets, spending time by the lake, cooking, and exploring the Finger Lakes. Traveling to new places with my partner and Australian Shepherd are my favorite ways to spend my time of all.
