Amy R. Spallone '08

Dr. Amy Spallone is an Infectious Diseases physician and Assistant Professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. In addition to her clinical and academic roles, she serves as Chief Infection Control Officer, a Patient Safety and Quality Officer, and an executive sponsor for MD Anderson’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, helping to advance excellence in patient care, safety, and quality across the institution.
Dr. Spallone began her academic journey at SUNY Corning Community College, where she graduated in 2008 with an Associate in Science degree. During her time at CCC, she also served as a field guide at the Spencer Crest Nature Center, an experience that reflected her early curiosity, leadership, and commitment to learning beyond the classroom.
She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and her medical degree from Albany Medical College. Dr. Spallone completed her internal medicine residency at Stony Brook University Hospital before relocating to Houston in 2018 for advanced specialty training at Baylor College of Medicine. There, she completed a two-year clinical Infectious Diseases Fellowship, followed by a third year in the NIH-funded Infection and Immunity T32 Infectious Diseases Advanced Research Program.
Her clinical research focuses on emerging infectious diseases, respiratory viral pathogens, and infection prevention in immunocompromised populations. Dr. Spallone serves as principal investigator on multiple clinical trials, including studies evaluating novel surface disinfection technologies, investigational therapies targeting respiratory viral pathogens, and the use of next-generation sequencing to enable real-time identification of hospital outbreaks.
