The SUNY Corning Community College men’s basketball team (15-9) will face the Cougars of Genesee Community College (21-7) on February 22 in the quarterfinal round of the NJCAA Region III Tournament. The opening tip is scheduled for 1:00 pm in Batavia, New York.

SUNY CCC is seeded seventh in the tournament, while the Cougars own the second seed, and as such, have earned hosting rights for Wednesday’s quarterfinal matchup.

The Red Barons have faced the Cougars twice during the regular season, with Genesee coming away with wins in both contests. January 21 was the most recent matchup, one that saw the GCC escape with a nine-point win, 63-54, thanks to a 10-0 run during the final three minutes of regulation.

Offensively, the Red Barons have a trio of players averaging double-digit points in Xavier Hill (20.0), Dwight Reed (13.4), and Cameron Rhode (11.2). Hill has been the catalyst for CCC, as he nearly averages a double-double with 9.5 rebounds per contest.

Hill, the NJCAA Region III Athlete of the Week on January 24, produced 28 of Corning’s 54 points in its last contest against Genesee. In 24 games this season, Hill has scored double figures in all but three games and has amassed 20-plus points on 13 occasions.

Reed has been solid offensively for the Red Barons, but has had a hot hand in recent action with an 18.3 points per game average on 29-of-48 shooting (60.4%) in Corning’s last four contests. Rhode, on the other hand, has been consistent throughout the season and produced 14 or more points in five of his last seven games.

Genesee has five players averaging double figures this season. Their leading scorer, Pepe Tunkara, is averaging 18.9 points per game and logged 19 in GCC’s win over CCC back in December.

The Cougars enter the quarterfinals with three straight wins and are 8-2 in their last 10 games with losses to Fulton-Montgomery Community College and Mohawk Valley Community College.
