On-Campus Jobs
Corning Community College students have opportunities to work a part-time job on- or off-campus while working towards their educational goals. Working an on-campus job gives many students the flexibility they may need to earn income around their class schedule, in addition to offering real work experience that looks great on resumes!
Federal Work Study
Federal Work Study (FWS) is a type of federal financial aid that provides students the opportunity to earn money through a part-time job. Under this program, students must apply by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and meet eligibility requirements every year. If a student receives a work-study award, the amount of the award is based on the student's specific needs and results of the FAFSA application. Funding is limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis - students are encouraged to apply and request FWS as soon as possible.
Who is Eligible?
In order to be eligible, students must:
- Be matriculated in a degree program.
- Have a valid FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid office.
- Maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher (for returning students).
- Maintain good progress according to the federal Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements
- Be enrolled in and maintain at least six credit hours
How to Apply for FWS
Students must complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to determine eligibility. Eligible students will then be identified by the Financial Aid office once a completed FAFSA has been received.
Returning Students
If the student had earned FWS in the prior year, they will automatically be offered FWS providing they are still eligible and if there is still funding when the Financial Aid office receives their FAFSA.
New/Incoming Students
If a student is identified as eligible but didn’t earn FWS in the prior year, the Financial Aid office will send communication to notify the student that they are eligible for FWS and ask the student to complete and submit the FWS Request Form to be offered FWS. If a student is interested in FWS but it was not offered or the student did not receive an email, students can contact the Financial Aid Office to see if the student would be eligible for FWS.
If a student is offered FWS but does not wish to participate, the student should decline the offer so the funds can be offered to other eligible students.
FWS Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Federal Work-Study program?
It is a federally funded program that allows eligible students to work part-time and
earn money to pay for college expenses while attending college.
How many hours can I work?
The maximum number of hours a student may work per semester depends on their work study award and job location. However, FWS only allows students to work up to 20 hours per week.
What is the pay rate?
FWS rate of pay will depend on the job, but will be at least New York State minimum
wage (currently $15.00/hr).
Does my paycheck go towards my college bill?
FWS earnings are paid directly to the student and will never be credited to a student’s bill.
Do I get paid to study?
No. When you accept a position you assume all the responsibilities of a part-time
employee.
Is a FWS position different than any other job?
No. You will interview and be expected to maintain professional standards including
being reliable, having a positive attitude and maintaining a good work ethic - just
as you would in any job. However, FWS provides you with practical, flexible scheduling
and provides you with the opportunity to gain experience, often in an area related
to your curriculum.
Is there a dress code?
In most cases casual attire is acceptable. However, check with your supervisor for
specific requirements.
Is my work schedule flexible?
Yes, supervisors will work with students to arrange their work schedule around their
class schedule. After a schedule is agreed upon by your supervisor, you must adhere
to it.
My academic load has made it necessary for me to cut back the number of hours I work
each week. Whom should I contact?
You should inform your supervisor and discuss a schedule that works for both of you.
You should also inform the Financial Aid office by contacting Yolanda Williams at
ywillia2@corning-cc.edu.
How do I get paid?
You will be paid bi-weekly (every two weeks). Students can choose to have their paychecks
mailed or direct deposited (highly recommended). Students are responsible for submitting
their timesheets on time.
Are FWS earnings taxable?
All FWS wages earned are subject to Federal and State Income Taxes. Statements of
wages earned (W-2) will be issued at the beginning of each year. You may be required
to file a tax return if your total earnings for the year meet the tax filing requirements.
Please contact a tax professional with any questions.
Do I have to reapply for FWS next academic year?
Yes, you must also complete a FAFSA each year so your eligibility can be determined.
Where can I find a list of available FWS positions?
Students can find an updated list of available FWS positions and apply for positions through their MyCorning Student Resources tab. Positions are updated frequently. For any assistance finding FWS positions or applying, please contact Career & Transfer Services at careers@corning-cc.edu.
I found out I am not eligible for FWS. Are there other opportunities for me on campus?
Students may be eligible to work in a student position under a department's budget (called "student hourly" positions) if positions are available. Please view the MyCorning Student Resources tab to find available positions that do not require FWS.
