The American Philosophical Association (APA) announced ten prizes for the first half of 2023, one of them being SUNY Corning Community College Professor of Philosophy Dr. Gregg Caruso, who was the recipient of the 2022 Joseph B. Gittler Award. 

The Joseph B. Gittler Award recognizes outstanding scholarly contributions in the field of the philosophy of one or more of the social sciences. Dr. Caruso received the award for his research on his book Rejecting Retributivism: Free Will, Punishment, and Criminal Justice. 

Dr. Caruso is a respected philosopher whose research focuses on philosophical issues related to free will and moral responsibility, punishment theory, and criminal justice reform. His research focuses on rethinking current criminal justice systems and developing alternatives to retributive punishment that are more humane and effective. 

Dr. Caruso's work has been cited in multiple books and journals, such as The Oxford Handbook of Free Will and The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. His research is also being used to inform public policy debates around criminal justice reform. He is praised for providing a comprehensive overview of the current debates surrounding punishment and justice while offering a fresh perspective on how these issues should be addressed in our contemporary society.
