SUNY CCC’s George Hurlburt and David Pindel Appointed SUNY System’s Highest Academic Rank - SUNY Distinguished Faculty
CORNING, N.Y. -- George Hurlburt and David Pindel of SUNY Corning Community College were conferred the rank of SUNY Distinguished Faculty by the State University of New York (SUNY) System. SUNY Distinguished Faculty is the State University’s highest academic rank and is conferred solely by the State University Board of Trustees.
Hurlburt, Professor of Mathematics, was bestowed the SUNY Distinguished Service Professorship, and Pindel, Professor of Biology, was presented the SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professorship.
Hurlburt serves as the President of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year College (AMATYC) and is a representative at the Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences (CBMS). Hurlburt’s work with AMATYC allowed him to advocate for the interests of community colleges, as well as the SUNY System, on the national platform. He’s been active in national conferences such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Organization for Student Success, enhancing mathematics education for students.
In 2011, Hurlburt received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service, and in 2012 he received CCC’s Regional Board of Trustees Excellence in Teaching Award. Additional accolades include being named SUNY’s Exemplary Online Educator in 2018 and NYSMATYC Outstanding Contributions to Mathematics in Education in 2020.
Pindel has had a profound impact on the College through his unwavering commitment to the field of science education and the academic success of his students. He instructs a range of science courses for students that encompass general biology, ecology, evolution, and microbiology, as well as two honors courses that interweave biology with history, culture, philosophy, and other disciplines. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Pindel serves as a mentor to a team of nine science faculty members and actively guides students within the College’s Environmental Science program.
His exceptional work has not gone unnoticed throughout the years. In 2006, Pindel received CCC’s Regional Board of Trustees Excellence in Teaching Award, and two years later was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2020, he was once again recognized by the SUNY System with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service.
