SUNY CCC Students at the Lavender Graduation

SUNY CCC Hosts First Lavender Graduation Ceremony for LGBTQ+ Students

In May 2023, SUNY Corning Community College held its first Lavender Graduation ceremony. The event aims to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of LGBTQ+ students from all backgrounds and create a sense of belonging. During this special event, LGBTQ+ graduates were presented with lavender and rainbow cords to signify their achievements and contributions to the college community.

Lavender Graduation is an annual ceremony held at universities to honor the achievements of LGBTQ+ students. The event was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a Jewish lesbian denied the opportunity to attend the graduations of her biological children because of her sexual orientation. Following this, Dr. Sanlo organized the first Lavender Graduation Ceremony in 1995, and many other universities worldwide have since adopted it.

The celebration marked an important milestone in SUNY CCC's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for its diverse student body. The event was a collaborative effort by the Diversity Council and Pride Club officers. The LGBTQ+ graduates coordinated and planned the event, from decorations to the speakers. The college strives for a more equitable campus climate through initiatives such as Lavender Graduation that promote inclusion and respect for all members of its community.

The ceremony provides a platform for LGBTQ+ students to be recognized and celebrated for their achievements in the face of social discrimination and exclusion. It also serves as a reminder of the continuous progress in creating an inclusive environment for all students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
