The Corning Community College Development Foundation recognized nearly 100 students during its annual Scholarship Reception on October 20. It marked the first time the event has occurred in person since 2019.

Just under 100 students were awarded scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year, totaling just a shade under $250,000. Approximately 78% of scholarship recipients were from the SUNY CCC’s tri-county service areas of Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben. The other 22% hailed from other areas of New York State, as well as Pennsylvania, Florida and the District of Columbia.

Those in attendance heard from a variety of speakers throughout the night, including Christine Iles from First Heritage Federal Credit Union and Dr. Donna Moore Powers of SUNY Corning Community College, who spoke about their respective scholarship awards.

Christine Iles, a Business Development Officer at First Heritage Federal Credit Union, spoke about the First Heritage Federal Credit Union Scholarship. Established in 2005, the scholarship is awarded to a full-time CCC student who graduated from a high school in the Southern Tier or Finger Lakes area of New York or Tioga County (Pennsylvania) who is pursuing an academic program in Math, Business, or Accounting.

SUNY CCC Professor of Biology, Dr. Donna Moore Powers, talked about a recently established award, The Don Moore Fresh Start Scholarship, named in memory of her father. Established in 2020, the scholarship is awarded to a full-time continuing CCC student who is returning to college after at least one year has elapsed since last attendance.

Award recipients had the opportunity to share how scholarships have impacted their lives and enabled them to pursue their academic aspirations. When asked about what the Doris A. Bovee Memorial Scholarship meant to Student Association Government Assembly (SAGA) President Joshua Goodwin, he said “It means a lot to me and my family. It shows that there are people out there who care about you that you might not see day to day, but they see what you are doing.”

“I have a lot of responsibilities outside of school that I have to take care of financially,” said Melanie Degraw, the Kelly Oakley Endowment Scholarship for Women recipient. “The scholarship helps me from staying out of debt while also getting my education.”
