SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr., Visits CCC Campus
The State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor, John B. King, Jr., spent the morning
of April 25 visiting various locations on the SUNY Corning Community College campus.
The visit was part of a SUNY-wide campus tour initiative by the Chancellor, who began
his tenure with SUNY in January of 2023.
Chancellor King began his tour with a stop at CCC’s Elmira Center, home to the College’s Workforce Education and Academic Pathways (WEAP) program, including its in-demand welding program.
From there, Chancellor King explored CCC’s Spencer Hill campus. His visit included stops at CCC’s Katherine P. Douglas Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, esports lab, Baron Necessities Food Pantry, and a quick interaction with the 2023 Walter R. Smith Visiting Scholar Series presenter, Dr. Meg Lowman.
He also paid a visit to the GST BOCES STEM Academy, located in CCC’s Steuben building. Chancellor King wrapped up his academic stops with visits to a Data Acquisition class, and a sneak peek at the College’s new Mechatronics and Makerspace labs, all of which were supported by various grants.
“It was a wonderful visit,” said Chancellor King. “It was great to see all the hands-on learning opportunities that students are getting, from welding to mechatronics. It was wonderful to visit the PTECH program and to see students in high school getting an early start on their college education.”
Collaboration is a core value of the College, and to emphasize its importance, the SUNY Chancellor met with employees of Corning Inc., some of whom serve on various boards at CCC.
“It was certainly great to see the depth of partnership with Corning Inc. and the degree to which students really have a clear pipeline to get great jobs,” Chancellor King stated.
Prior to his departure, the SUNY Chancellor had a chance for a photo op with members of the College’s math team that finished third in the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) Student Math League.
