CORNING, N.Y. -- SUNY Corning Community College has announced the appointment of Dr. Tony Wohlers as the College’s new Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. In this role, Dr. Wohlers will oversee SUNY CCC’s academic programs, partnerships, and workforce training.

"I am looking forward to empowering our students at Corning Community College so that they can reach their fullest potential,” said Dr. Wohlers. “By building transformative partnerships with community organizations and industries in Corning and beyond, we will create opportunities that enhance student success while elevating our community. Together, let us shape our future where both individuals and communities thrive."

With 20-plus years of experience in higher education, Dr. Wohlers most recently served as the Dean of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland, a position he held for more than seven years.

During his time at Harford, Dr. Wohlers led interdisciplinary divisions, oversaw degree, certificate, and apprenticeship programs, managed extensive budgets, and supervised a dedicated team of faculty and staff. He helped secure over $1.35 million in grants from federal, state, and local resources, including a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for Advanced Technological Education. Other notable achievements include the revival of the College’s Honors Program and the establishment of the Maryland Scholars Summit.

Dr. Wohlers was an active member of the Bel Air community. He built partnerships with community organizations and led local, regional, and statewide not-for-profit advisory boards, such as the Harford County Department of Health Service Advisory Board, Harford County Education Foundation, and Maryland Association of Social Services Boards. Through these efforts, he addressed the needs of vulnerable populations while creating professional development opportunities for faculty and experiential learning opportunities for students.

Before Harford, Dr. Wohlers worked at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, from 2005 to 2017. He began his tenure at Cameron as an Assistant Professor, serving as the Interim Chair of the Department of History and Government, and held the positions of Director of Academic Research and Director of Academic Enrichment. Dr. Wohlers developed an interdisciplinary Honors Program curriculum that integrated undergraduate research, study abroad, and service-learning opportunities. His efforts doubled the study abroad programs and the recruitment strategies implemented helped increase Honors Program enrollment by over 300%

Prior to joining Cameron, Dr. Wohlers served as a visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Eastern Illinois University, adjunct faculty in the Department of Political Science at Dominican University, and an instructor in the Department of Political Science at Northern Illinois University.
