Value Stream Mapping (VSM)

Value

Value Stream Mapping captures and documents processes, including material and informational flows. Wherever there is a product for a customer, there is a value stream. The challenge lies in seeing it. This course teaches participants how to see their value streams from a waste and flow perspective, leading to out-of-the box thinking and breakthrough improvement.

Students will:
     • Learn how to define a product or service value stream
     • Learn how to construct “current” and “future” state maps
     • Learn basic Lean Thinking philosophy and methodologies
     • “Learn by doing” by constructing maps for a fictitious company

Outline of Course Topics:
     I. Introduction to Value Stream Mapping
     II. Developing Current State Maps
     III. Lean Thinking Basics
     IV. Developing Future State Maps
     V. Achieving the Future State – Developing a Plan

Why this type of training is important to manufacturers:
The aim of Value Stream Mapping is to get employees to work together to see their operations from a systems perspective. They will learn how to recognize waste and improve flow within value streams. This will lead to improved lead times, right-sized inventory, increased productivity, and increased employee morale.
