Being a resident assistant can be one of the most influential and rewarding leadership opportunities available to students at SUNY Corning Community College. Becoming an RA is a great way to get involved on campus and make a positive difference in the lives of your fellow students. Resident Assistants create a sense of community on campus, get to know different students, and learn more about themselves. 

Resident Assistants provide leadership assistance and support to students in the residence hall while enforcing all policies and regulations within Perry Hall. Resident Assistants are part-time student leaders that report to the Coordinator of Residence Life & Retention. As a Resident Assistant, you have the opportunity to act as a navigator of students' experiences, assist students with academic support, help students develop relationships across campus, and, most importantly, assist students in having a positive experience living in Perry Hall. The RA works in collaboration with the Student Services staff, SUNY CCC faculty and staff, residents, and other RAs to maximize the student growth and development experiences of students in Perry Hall.

Responsibilities of an RA

The RA position handles a variety of responsibilities and requires skills in multitasking. The RA position  requires time commitments that requires availability during evenings, weekends, and break weeks. The role as a student comes first, and the RA position is second and prioritized over any other extra-curricular activities or employment. Resident Assistant Job Description

Position Category:

Part-time academic year based position reporting to the Coordinator of Residence Life & Retention at SUNY Corning Community College.

General Responsibilities:

The Resident Assistant (RA) provides leadership, assistance, and support to the students in the residence hall while enforcing all policies and regulations within Perry Hall. The RA works in collaboration with the Student Services staff, SUNY CCC faculty and staff, residents, and other RAs to maximize the student growth and development experiences of students in the hall.

Specific Responsibilities:

           1. Promote a living-learning environment by planning, publicizing, and providing a number of                            creative community development activities throughout the year.

         2. In addition to regular programming, assist with additional educational programming                                       opportunities.

          3. Proactively respond to resident needs and concerns, within the community.

          4. Assist with incoming student orientation, move-in day, hold floor meetings with assigned residents.

          5. Participate in evening office coverage and overnight on-call rotation with other RAs.

          6. Participate in duty coverage of Perry Hall during designated break times (opening and closing                     procedures, potentially on-call, and in residence over breaks).

          7. Be present during assigned duty hours, maintaining welcoming desk presence, completing building
             rounds, acting upon or facilitating action for any matters coming to attention during duties,                         supporting other RA(s).

          8. Carry out administrative responsibilities such as completion of room condition reports, student                     check-in/out, inspections, visitors log, preparation of duty logs/work orders and other                                     documentation as requested/relevant.

          9. Refer students when appropriate to other college offices or staff that might best provide assistance
              and/or further support.

         10. Attendance and participation in Residence Life Staff meetings, staff development                                        initiatives/activities.

          11. Communicate, interpret, and consistently enforce residence hall polices, regulations, and the                         College’s Code of Conduct, in line with institutional ethos.

          12. Immediately inform the Coordinator of Residence Life & Retention or Director of Student                              Services of any unusual occurrences in the hall, particularly serious safety or security                                  issues/concerns.

           13. Conscious of professional image, appreciate necessary boundaries in relation to other residents,                   uphold consistent and fair treatment toward members of the community and workplace.

           14. Maintain effective communication with co-workers, understand and agree on realistic                                   expectations of each other.

           15. Maintain highest standard of confidentiality when dealing with students/staff information.

           16. Provide academic support for residents as part of the Perry Hall Retention Plan.

Qualifications:

● Completed one semester at SUNY CCC by the end of the Spring 2020 semester

● RA candidates are not required to be current or previous resident students though living in a residence hall for one semester is preferred

● Currently enrolled full-time as a student at SUNY Corning Community College

● A minimum requirement of a 2.5 GPA is required at the time of application

● Good conduct standing with SUNY Corning Community College

●Additional outside employment must not exceed 15 hours a week unless approved by the Coordinator of        Residence Life & Retention

● CPR and First Aid certification; must complete certification

Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

        1. Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions
        2. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other students and staff and the                    public
        3. Ability to use software such as MS Word and MS Excel
        4. Ability to prioritize and work to deadlines
        5. Ability to work in a variety of settings (supervised and unsupervised; individual, pair, small group,                 large group; office/service desk environment and personal space)
        6. Experience or understanding of resolving conflict / difficult behavior, reacts effectively in potentially
           high-stress situations
        7. Patient and approachable, good interpersonal skills such as listening, communication, empathy
        8. Exhibits a predominantly positive attitude to CCC as a whole, inclusive of Perry Hall, and an interest              in personal development
        9. Demonstrates initiative, flexible approach to working, good organization, and time management skills
       10. Commitment to diversity, promoting awareness, and sensitivity within a diverse community
       11. Ability to enforce all policies and report policy violations regardless of relationship with the residents
       12. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
